Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar ChildrenMiss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jacob’s life starts out ordinary, parents who barely pay attention to him and a grandpa who spins fanciful tales for young Jacob to be enthralled with. As he grows older he no longer believes Grandpa’s tales of monsters and about the school of peculiar children. Then tragedy occurs and Jacob comes to the realization that maybe Grandpa was telling him the truth. And so Jacob’s new life, a life no longer ordinary, begins on an island in Wales were Grandpa lived during WWII. The first person narration takes a hold of you and you begin to uncover pieces of the story along with Jacob, you find out all the twists and turns at the same time he does, often times you are breathless with anticipation. I experienced sadness, anger, amusement, fear, confusion all at the same time as Jacob. The author also uses some amazing black and white photos that are strategically placed throughout the book which help in pulling you further into the story. Imagine the book as a picture book for adults. An entertaining read recommended highly. However, don’t expect a tidy ending with everything solved, unknown if Ransom Riggs plans on writing a follow up to this story, as the ending leaves many questions and speculations open. A very entertaining read!

Voodoo Dues (Lian and Figg #1)Voodoo Dues by Stephany Simmons

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What a surprise! I was hooked from the moment I read the first line and did not want the story to end. The style of switching between the main characters, Figg and Lian’s, points of view was refreshing. Zombies, voodoo, werewolves, necromancy and a splash of designer shoes makes the perfect crime fighting mystery with romance and just the right amount of humor. The hero’s are clearly opposites who attract, Figg a gun toting, fearless shoe loving woman with feminine curves and Lian a strong private man with a hint of brokenness made me fall in love with them instantly! Many more characters add to the books charm, but you’ll have to read it yourself! I highly recommend it and can’t wait for the next installment in Figg and Lian’s adventures.

Can You Keep a Secret? Sophie Kinsella

Can You Keep a Secret? Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was chosen by my book club to read and was a pleasant change to our normal Paranormal Romance reads. I was instantly taken in by the Emma Corrigan, the main character and her ordinary life. I instantly connected with her life, trying to get ahead, having a family where she felt like an outsider a "perfect" boyfriend who just didn't do it for her. Then comes the exciting plane ride where she is instantly upgraded to first class and sits next to the handsome stranger. Helloooo who wouldn't dream of THAT happening?!?! Spilling all of her most dearest, darkest secrets to this stranger only to have him turn out to be her, gasp, main boss. The courtship, the way she viewed things, it was so everyday and it made perfect sense to me. We all have similar secrets I'm sure, I know for a fact that I do, and it was refreshing for me, through Emma, to actually let them out. I was mortified when all of them were shared with the world and wanted to hide under a rock with her as well. This book made me feel so many emotions that I could not put it down. The only complaint I had was the way Emma easily forgave him for spreading all of her secrets to the world, at first she was really resisting and I was cheering her on, "yes! Sock it to him!! don't let him get off so easily, he humiliated you" but then it helped to open up the relationships with her family and her friends, after all they weren't heavy secrets (think duct-tape, black garbage bags and removal of evidence), so then I too softened my heart towards him. Highly recommended!
